Splotches

So Grace Potter & the Nocturnals performed at my college last night.  It's her band's 10th anniversary and she attended St. Lawrence for two years, while co-founder Matt Burr is an alum.  Apparently everyone was drunkenly crazed for the sold-out, Sunday night show in the old field house!  I'm not surprised, and it sounds like a riot!  If you haven't listened to Grace yet, you should look up her song "Stars" which was on the sound track for the Disney movie Tangled.
While 1,500 miles south, I was watching the Grammy's.  This is not a pity party, I swear; I'm definitely making the best of things.  I spent the day with my parents and relatives from Ohio who just bought a house down here, and we went kayaking with the manatees again.  I paddled more closely to them this time, like the adorable, 4 foot, 60 pound baby manatee that bobbed up and down in the shallow waters.  Regarding the Grammy awards, hell yeah to the Black Keys for winning 3 from the rock genre.  I commend Jack White too, for remaining his grizzly, no fucks rock n' roll self.  I was also pleased to see that no one really 'swept' the awards across the board.. that tends to be boring.  My favorite part was Bruno Mars' performance of "Locked Out of Heaven" that morphed into a Bob Marley tribute with Sting, Rhianna, Ziggy and Damian Marley.  (Sorry not sorry for the pop culture reviews, but that's what happens when you have an extra three weeks of winter break and an accessible television :B)

I was delighted on Friday to receive a huge photo order from an iPhone app called Postal Pix!  I printed over a year's worth of photos, in 2x2" square format, regular 4x6" and even a collage.  I'm a complete photo junkie, so I love that these memories are finally tangible.  Although they have to come down next week, the photos are now displayed in my bedroom with string, tape and paper clips.  Now I can clear up my phone memory for more photography in China..!

And coming soon to a mail box near you... painted post cards! :)
Along with some emotions on paper.  I may continue this as a series.

I just finished this canvas board acrylic on Saturday.  It was inspired by a sketch from freshman year studio art, referencing the natural, stylism of Japonisme.
"The Great Wave Off Kanagawa", a wood block print by Japanese artist Hokusai  c. 1829-1830.
Still ruminating on a title for this one!

As much as I try to resist the temptations of purchasing new clothes --I already have enough clothing and a certain guilt for the social and environmental costs of consumerism (off shore outsourcing to underpaid workers in tax-evading corporate zones, also known as EPZs ... and that's why when I frequent thrift stores for clothing, because the products are recycled to someone else who may love them, rather than a dump or contributing to further production) -- I went shopping today.  It's particularly counter-intuitive at this point because I'm travelling and the majority of clothes are manufactured in China anyway!
Socially conscious irony aside, I went to Target for tights and came out with two polyester/spandex dresses that actually are quite flattering, at my mother's urging ("I'll buy it for Valentine's Day and if you ever have a job you'll need new clothes" -- thanks, Mom).  Oh, and three pairs of tights.  According to style guides online, the Shanghai ladies are quite stylish and opt for skirts with tights instead of jeans, even in the winter.  I gravitated towards tights frequently when I was in France so that should be fun.  These dresses are of the same design but different pattern, and they have a lot of potential since I didn't own a LBD, and I probably wouldn't have picked out the abstract blue pattern on my own.  That places always wins me over.
I'll kick myself in a few months if these dresses aren't worn, but I think I've become a better trained, selective shopper.  Some day I hope my self-esteem is secure regardless of what I'm wearing; but for now, the clothes bolster my confidence on its way.

When I'm Not Working

I truly enjoy cooking and feeding people.  I wish my parents were a bit more adventurous with food and ate all that I do, but that's why I need to have friends over to my house more often so I'm not gorging on everything!  For example, last Thursday I invited Kerry over and put together a chicken roast with potatoes, onions, spinach and tomatoes.  I seasoned the chicken breasts with lemon pepper, cumin and parsley and then stuffed them with a bit of Swiss cheese and more spinach.  Even with my guest, my parents had leftovers and I had two meals for work!  It was delicious and simple, so give me a shout if you'd like the recipe!
I go to school in a pretty rural area, and I'm not much of an online shopper when it comes to clothes.  Needless to say, my first Salvation Army visit last Wednesday since winter break was a thrill!  I was in heaven again, sifting through all the color-organized racks, the soft and musty clothing with bright colors, off-sized fits and throwback patterns.  Wednesday is the half-off day and I spent $25 and acquired things such as a nice mason jar with a lid, Matilda and The Rescuers Down Under on VHS, a pair of American Eagle jeans for $2, a fluorescent orange windbreaker, a new houndstooth scarf, a New York & Co. pink cardigan, these wonderful printed drop-crotch pants (okayyy so it's two seasons ago and they are pure man-repelling status [term courtesy of the Man Repeller] but at this low of the price how could I resist?) and so on!  I love thrift shopping.
I nabbed this woven tote as I was heading to the dressing room--it's in perfect condition. Score!
When I have more than a moment to spare, I dive into painting.  I enjoy being lost for a few hours, not knowing exactly what my brain and brush might produce.  The one below is a preliminary for a larger painting that I would like to do on canvas from Monet's gardens in Giverny this past fall.  Photo cred goes to my friend Merrit.
Weapons of choice :)

I wasn't quite ready to start a full-size painting, so I made note cards!  I need to acquire a nice set of water colors, I miss manipulating their fluidity and saturating textured paper.

I am decidedly too antsy and lazy to read books.  I'm trying so hard to work through an environmental one by Bill McKibben, so maybe it's the subject matter that's not holding me down enough?  Bah whatever, I'll drift in between with my NatGeo Traveler magazines.  I'm itching to trot the globe again!

Proof of a Prodctive Winter Break

Well, these have been a ridicously fast five weeks. Maybe winter break was so bare able this year because I didn't come home in the fall (not that I could have). And although most of my studious expectations fell apart, I did complete some of my desired tasks, like painting!! This is a portrait of a model from the Chanel Spring/Summer 2011 campaign. It was about 13-15 hours worth of work over five days. It's now hanging in what little wall space we had left in the living room. And yes, I purposely didn't paint the neck strap. Gotta live artistic editing!!!

Yeah Buddy

I found this cheery little political quiz on Facebook.

It's harmless, and somewhat insightful.  The results don't surprise me one bit; in fact, I'm pleased!
My Political Views
I am a left moderate social libertarian
Left: 6.75, Libertarian: 1.93

My Foreign Policy Views
On the left side are pacifists and anti-war activists. On the right side are those who want a strong military that intervenes around the world.
You scored: -5.45

My Culture War Stance
Where are you in the culture war? On the liberal side, or the conservative side? This scale may apply more to the US than other countries.
You scored: -5.56
Political Spectrum Quiz

Go ahead and take the quiz, then post it if you dare :).

In other, ravishing, ground-breaking news in the world of Nicole, I went thrift shopping with my boys Tucker and Nick the other day.

We ambushed our friend Caitlan at Wegmans, where she was making pizza during lunch rush hour.

We had Philly cheesesteaks (chicken cheese, for me) on the sidewalk, watching people about their business.

And we strolled a bit more, because I'm in search for a beautiful woven tapestry to hang on my wall at school next spring. The shop unfortunately wasn't open, but we found some intriguing street art. Who's the Banksy wannabe, I wonder?

At the Salvation Army, I bought an unrelentingly bright, cotton romper, a sheer floral button-down, the perfect yellow rain jacket with a hood (kind of a big deal for me-- I don't own any jackets with hoods), and a new pair of leather shoes!  Found'em in the men's section but they're broken in and fit quite nicely.
And the grand total : $11.34 :D

Yeahhh buddayyy!  That was one of those 'so-annoying-can't-help-but-say-it' taglines at work tonight.  Cheers to the weekend, everyone!
